Kale - The Superfood for Skin & Hair
Have you ever tried kale in a smoothie thinking "Well, it will probably be as healthy as people proclaim it to be...". But, how healthy is kale really and how does it boost well-being?
Kale is popular in Northern German cuisine. It is primarily used as a side in hearty dishes. It is all the hype these days. Kale is harvested between September and February which makes it ideal for replenishing our nutrient levels during winter. It is packed with nutrient-dense components, such as vitamins A, C and K, folic acid, calcium, potassium, magnesium, iron, omega-3 fatty acids, fibre, phytonutrients and chlorophyll - just to name a few.
Benefits for the skin
The superfood has marvellous effects when used as an ingredient in skincare products: it replenishes the vitamin and mineral levels of the skin and the hair whilst stimulating collagen production.
Kale is more abundant in antioxidants than most other leafy greens. Antioxidants fight against skin aging from within. This leafy green is rich in vitamin A that supports the skin from within and stimulates connective tissue growth. Various vitamins are also responsible for supplying the skin with exceptional moisture. Kale detoxifies in a natural way, cleanses the pores and reduces the appearance of wrinkles.
As such, using kale-based skincare products on a regular basis can boost overall glow and provide the skin with a healthy appearance.
Benefits for the hair
Vitamin A also acts as a miracle agent for the hair: it stimulates sebum production and improves hair elasticity. When consuming kale, blood circulation on the scalp is encouraged which, in turn, accelerates hair growth and even reduces dandruff formation. Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids boost hair resilience and deliver incredible shine!
It might be difficult to believe, but the use of kale is not only limited to being used for smoothies and salads. It can also be transformed into a healthy snack to nibble on whilst watching your favourite TV show:
Recipe: Kale Chips
- 250 g kale
- 3 tablespoons olive oil
- ½ teaspoon salt
Rinse the kale thoroughly, rip into small, bite-sized pieces then allow to dry. Place the kale into a bowl and marinate with olive oil and salt. Preheat the oven to 130°C. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Distribute the marinated kale on the sheet - be sure to space the leaves out. Bake for 30 - 40 minutes.
Tip: For crispier chips, leave the oven door ajar every now and then to allow the steam to escape whilst baking.
